Whether you're using a Moccamaster or another batch brewer, following a reliable recipe gives you the foundation to dial in your perfect cup. We think that the funkier the better works the great on filter to experience the full flavour.

To brew the best filter coffee, follow these steps:

Always Work with a Clean Machine

  • Rinse the filter basket before brewing
  • Clean the carafe thoroughly after every use
  • Descale your machine regularly using the manufacturer's instructions

Prep Your Ingredients

  • Weigh your coffee and water every time for consistency
  • Use fresh, preferably filtered water
  • Use freshly ground coffee at a medium grind size

Execute with Precision

  • Place a paper filter in the basket and rinse with hot water
  • Add your ground coffee and level the bed
  • Start your brew cycle and ensure even saturation
  • Let the coffee finish brewing completely before serving

Our Recipe: Use "The Good Stuff" or our current Guest Brew

  • Coffee: 60g (medium grind)
  • Water: 1L filtered water
  • Brew time: Varies by machine (typically 4–6 minutes)

Scaling Your Recipe Use the ratio of 6g coffee to 100g water to adjust for any brew size.

  • For example: a regular 300ml coffee would need 18g of ground coffee

Dialing In

  • Coffee too weak or sour → grind finer or use more coffee
  • Coffee too bitter or harsh → grind coarser or use less coffee

Top Tip: When adjusting your recipe, change only one variable at a time and taste at every step.

A great filter coffee is clean, balanced, and showcases the natural flavors of the beans. Enjoy it black to appreciate the full flavor profile, or add milk and sugar to taste.
